The Civil Peace Service (ZFD) Program was founded in 1999 as a joint venture of eight German civil society agencies working in the field of non-violent conflict transformation. The German Federal Ministry for International Cooperation and Development serves as a donor. GIZ is one of these agencies. ZFD’s mission is to build peace with partners in post-conflict societies around the world. Today, ZFD programs are implemented in 22 countries. In Iraq, the program is still quite new. A first field of intervention is dealing with the crimes committed by the so-called “Islamic State”/Da’esh. Survivors of those crimes are empowered by legal and psychosocial support. In a second field of intervention, called “Iraqi Youth for Peace”, ZFD will shall encourage young women and men to active citizenship, resistance to all forms of violence, prevention of radicalism and promotion of an Iraqi identity above sectarianism.

One of the chosen approaches will be a youth-based protection of the diverse cultural heritage of Iraq.

For this purpose, ZFD is seeking an Iraqi national for the position of a Youth Capacity Development Advisor for the next possible start of contract.

B.General Responsibilities

The Youth Capacity Development Advisor will work in close cooperation with the ZFD Program Coordinator and other international peace experts in Erbil. He/she has the following general responsibilities:

  • Contributing to the overall achievement of the program

  • Performing all duties in the assigned area of responsibility

  • Maintaining a friendly and empathetic attitude with team members, partners and members of the target groups

  • Liaising with partners all-over Iraq in an all-partisan a service-oriented manner

C.Duties and tasks in Detail

The Youth Capacity Development Advisor:

  • Supports the whole ZFD team in the implementation of the program in Iraq

  • Assesses the capacities of local partner organizations, their staff and important intermediaries as well their need for further capacity development

  • Designs and manages the implementation of trainings on various peace methods for the staff of partner organizations and their intermediaries, in particular young peace activists

  • Collects feedback of participants on the satisfactions with received training and their use of the learned content

  • Organizes the sharing of trainers of various peace-relevant methods between other ZFD teams in the region, other GIZ programs as well as various partners

  • Prepares grant agreements and local consultancy contracts related to the above tasks

  • Contributes to the knowledge management of the ZFD team and GIZ

  • Performs other important tasks within the ZFD team according to needs and available resources


Qualifications and professional experience

  • Degree from an Iraqi university, ideally in political science or peace studies

  • Knowledge about diverse material cultural heritage of Iraq

  • Experience in working with youth for the prevention of violence and radicalism

  • Additional advanced training received during previous employment

  • Experience in working in or for an international development organization

  • Native speaker of the Arabic language, excellent command of English

  • Acceptance of frequent travels in Northern Iraq (within the security regime of GIZ)

  • Very good working knowledge of IT technologies (related software for personal computer and smart phone, fax, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
