Background:

The Iraq Community Resilience Initiative – Ta’afi (ICRI-Ta’afi) is a United States Agency for International Development Office of Transition Initiatives (USAID/OTI) program implemented by Chemonics International in Iraq. ICRI-Ta’afi aims to increase stability in Iraq by supporting accelerated recovery in conflict-affected areas, improvement of the public’s perception of local leadership, and strengthened social fabric of Iraqi communities.

Purpose:

The Social Media Officer is responsible for developing compelling social media posts that help to promote ICRI-Ta’afi’s project goals. The Social Media Officer communicates through social media program successes to key local and international stakeholders and amplifies program messages among key local stakeholders to enhance impact.

Reporting:

The Social Media Officer reports directly to the Communications & Reporting Officer.

Location:

Erbil, Iraq.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors and analyzes Iraqi digital and social media for news, analysis, and public perceptions of the political, social, economic, cultural and development context, from a broad range of articles and sources

  • Drafts social media posts for ICRI-Ta’afi in line with program communications strategy

  • Acts as a moderator for ICRI-Ta’afi’s social media pages

  • To the extent possible, assesses the political, tribal or other leanings of sources and sites, taking this into account in the creation of products and attempting to achieve a balance of viewpoints where feasible

  • Prepares and delivers routine and ad hoc reporting to inform program development, MEL and team context analysis

  • Designs and delivers training and workshops to IRP staff on use of digital and other media for context analysis to IRP staff and partners

  • Works with MEL, operations and procurement to articulate specifications for media monitoring and social media monitoring tools that could be used to inform strategy and design and evaluate program impact

  • Inputs into activity development in the development of outreach plans, works directly with grantees where warranted to assist in the development of outreach plans, and assists GMU and OTI staff to evaluate outreach deliverables related to social media

  • Monitors the Iraqi media landscape and media usage, advising on best avenues to reach Iraqis through ICRI-Ta’afi activities

  • Updates ICRI-Ta’afi media tracker

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, or equivalent experience, required

  • A minimum of two years of experience conducting similar activities in the private or public sector

  • Knowledge of the Iraqi context, current dynamics, and actors

  • Strong capabilities in social media analytics programs

  • Ability to collaborate with and receive guidance from donor and IRP staff to ensure outputs meet the project’s data collection and analysis needs

  • Ability to work with culturally and geographically diverse staff

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines consistently

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to prioritize multiple work assignments in an extremely fast-paced environment, to meet deadlines, and to exercise strong professional judgment

  • Ability to work in a professional and cordial manner with colleagues, visitors, and the general public

  • Strong understanding of conflict sensitivity

  • Fluency in written and oral Arabic and English is required

  • Written and oral fluency in Kurdish and other local languages (Assyrian and Chaldean) is preferred, but not required
