We are looking for a detail oriented, creative, problem-solving Structural Engineer with excellent mathematical, IT and analytical skills. Your responsibilities will include performing and managing simple and complex analysis, design and documentation of various structures with emphasis on bridges, buildings, dams, parking structures, marine construction, water and wastewater treatment facilities, telecommunications structures, retaining walls, foundations, structure replacements and rehabilitations as well as conducting field investigation and construction phase observation.
To ensure success, you should display an investigative nature and must be accurate, commercially aware and have great communication skills with a keen interest in ensuring the safety and physical integrity of buildings and other large structures. Top candidates will have fantastic project and budget management skills with great knowledge of construction processes, materials, and legal regulations.
 
Responsibilities
  • Prepare reports, designs and drawings.
  • Manage, administer, and design structural projects and structural components of non-structural projects.
  • Make calculations about pressures, loads, and stresses.
  • Consider the strength of construction materials and select appropriately.
  • Provide technical advice on safe designs and construction.
  • Obtain planning and/or building regulations approval.
  • Issue reports, schedules, estimates of probable costs, responses to SOIs, RFPs.
  • Review designs prepared by others as part of a TQM process.
  • Perform peer reviews, forensic studies and expert reporting and witness services.
  • Perform design and analysis functions for various structures.
  • Conduct assessments and evaluations of existing structures.
  • Analyze configurations of the basic components of a structure.
  • Liaise with professional staff such as architects and engineers.
  • Attend meetings with clients, jurisdictional agencies, other professionals, and organizations.
  • Supervise others including but not limited to administrative, technical, and professional staff
  • Develop solutions to challenges presented by the client within budget, schedule, and project constraints
  • Monitor and inspect all work undertaken by contractors to ensure structural soundness.
  • Administer contracts and manage projects.
  • Inspect properties to evaluate the conditions and foundations.
  • Use computer aided design technology for simulation purposes.
  • Deliver innovative, sustainable, efficient, safe, practical, and intelligent structural engineering solutions on all projects and other activities, appropriate to the stage and type of project.
  • Manage a team of engineers and technicians to produce complete, coordinated, and high-quality project information (calculations, drawings, specifications, and other documents) on time and on budget to meet agreed deadlines and exceed expectations, avoid delays on site and claims from the contractor.
  • Undertake multi-discipline design & coordination activities with all relevant members of the design team.
  • Produce project information personally as necessitated by the needs of the business.
  • Ensure the overall stability of your designs in the permanent/final condition as well as during construction.
  • Ensure reviews are conducted sufficiently in advance of all deadlines, such that any necessary amendments can comfortably be completed prior to issue as agreed.
  • Ensure all designs are thoroughly checked independently by other engineers, and ensure all errors are corrected prior to issue of the documents.
  • Errors or problems should be recorded and discussed with the Director(s), so that corrective action can be taken to avoid such problems in future.
  • Ensure Health and Safety is considered at all stages of the design process such that the designs produced minimize risk during construction while exceeding the client/architect’s expectations.
  • Maintain a CDM Designers Risk Register on all projects, detailing the process by which all risks were identified and subsequently eliminated or minimized.
  • Ensure that adequate notes are added to drawings so that all unusual risks, that cannot be eliminated from the design, are highlighted to the contractor, and any specific methods of working or sequencing are described clearly.
  • Produce physical and/or computer models of projects as appropriate.
  • Ensure all necessary opening-up and site investigations are carried out on all projects to accurately assess the ground conditions, existing buildings, and boundary conditions.
  • Ensure high standards of presentation are maintained in all documents issued by Structure Mode.
  • Deputize for the Director(s) and more senior staff in their absence.
  • Travel is necessary to visit sites and staying on the project for a designated duration.  
  • Working hours are typically standard office hours, but strict deadlines mean longer hours, weekends and being on-call are all possible and expected.
 
Skills and Requirements
  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (essential). 
  • Master of Engineering or Science Degree (preferred). 
  • Minimum of 10 years of project engineering and management experience as a Structural Engineer (essential).
  • Extensive experience in camp design and construction. (200 men and above/ residential complexes)
  • Valid Professional Engineering License.
  • Familiarity with design and analysis using various materials including but not limited to metals such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum & iron; concrete and precast concrete; prestressed and post-tensioned concrete; timber; HMA; synthetics; composites; epoxies/resins/polymers; FRP; HDPE
  • Possesses advanced knowledge of various design and documentation software
  • Expert experience in project management.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction methods, materials, and legal regulations.
  • Sound understanding of physics and mathematics.
  • Ability to liaise with professionals from other disciplines.
  • Three-dimensional conceptual skills.
  • Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with the superb organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to understand complex problems and to collaborate with others to explore alternative solutions.
  • Demonstrates the highest degree of ethical behavior and candor.
  • Comfortable performing in an environment that requires independent evaluation, judgment and decision making 
  • Excellent communication and IT skills.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills including the ability to compose letters, outlines, memoranda, complex reports and to orally communicate technical information to others.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. 
  • Proficient in Primavera. 
  • Fluent in English.
