Line Manager: In-country Drilling Superintendent. Must work well with the in-country drilling superintendents, rig supervisors, and senior drilling engineers.

Location:  Rig site at either Sarta of Qara Dagh wells. Ideally on a 28/28 Rotation. Covid may change rotation to 2 weeks quarantine in Erbil, 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off, or similar type schedule. Some travel to Mud Companies, Erbil, Suli, rig locations, and other locations.

The Genel Drilling Department is taking a long-term view toward developing a performance drilling team to optimize drilling efficiency and drive down trouble time and costs in very challenging drilling environments. The senior mud engineer in Kurdistan will work close with the London Drilling Team and the daily rig operations to develop and implement the Drilling Programs (Drilling, Workovers, Plug and Abandonments, Completions, Well Tests, etc) while pursuing performance drilling and reducing NPT. This role will work with and monitor daily the mud company products used and mud quality to ensure mud properties are as reported.

Key Accountabilities (Bold indicate the key qualifications for initial assignments)
  • Review key offset information (DDRs, mud reports, etc) and develop a drilling issues mud plan with mitigations previously used and proposed.
  • Conduct a detailed drilling fluid study with the existing mud companies in Kurdistan to optimize the drilling fluids recommendation.
  • Assist with implementing the MPD to be used during the upcoming drilling campaign.
  • Visit in-country the drilling mud contractors and service companies to assess their capability, products supply, and equipment condition. 
  • Provide third party engineering QaQC for the mud companies. 
  • Ensure familiar with LCM products that may be used, how to mix and pump them.
  • Work with the Performance Drilling concepts to develop a world class performance drilling team with goals for annual performance improvement relating to mud.
  • Numerous other projects as directed.
  • Provide 24/7 mud engineering support for Sarta and Qara Dagh drilling and completion programs.
  • Show strong HSE leadership during the drilling execution phases. 
  • Follow up of the mud performance of the well with respect to established KPIs and develop recommendations for operational improvement. Track service company performances and review reports of non-conformance events.
  • Support peer assists, technical reviews, DWOPs, CWOPS, TWOP, Spud meetings, BARs, AARs, etc.
  • Maintain and track fully accurate mud inventory daily, maintain products MSDS.  
  • Responsible for performing drilling mud studies to ensure optimum well design and operations execution.
  • Review the Basis of Design (BOD), Drilling and Completion Programs.  
  • Ensure all work within the area of responsibility is adequately documented and lessons learned are captured for the benefit of future operations worldwide.
  • Ensure well material and service providers comply with specified quality assurance requirements.
  • Ensures all drilling and completion drilling fluid activities comply with company standards and appropriate industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure drilling meets subsurface well objectives and requirements.
  • Build effective relationships and interact professionally with internal / external stakeholders and service companies.
  • Provide inputs during the drilling, completion, and well test job execution and work with the drilling engineers conducting the post job analysis as needed.
  • Work with the mud company to ensure end of well final mud report completed within two weeks after the end of the well.
  • Plan for future wells and ensure required materials and services are available in country and allocated as required.
  • Comply with Management of Change: ensure stakeholders clearly understand the proposed change and that the advice given is relevant and accurate.
  • Oversee and assist in the development of Genel Drilling folders and files as related to drilling fluids and development of a drilling learnings database.
  • Ensure daily drilling mud reports are fully accurate and reflect the actual condition of the mud.
  • Monitor daily the pore pressure work and ensure operations parameters are met (for example hydrostatic overbalance as required). 
  • Provide daily mud engineering support to the Head of Drilling, In-country Drilling Manager, Drilling Superintendent, drilling and completion engineers including updating daily mud reports, verifying mud weight, developing and maintaining daily electronic records and notebooks, other activities as needed. 
  • Assist with the development of new company drilling and completion mud policies and procedures, guidelines, and regulations. Monitor compliance. Ensure MOC process complied with and monitor mud for exploration and development wells including Qa/Qc, document control, mud software requirements and tools, etc. Work close with drilling team to ensure commonality and continuous improvement process is in place.  
  • Develop monthly and quarterly mud statistics and operations review for senior management performance review meetings and QPRs with service companies. 
  • Coordinate special projects and studies, internal investigations, peer reviews, audits, insurance claims, NPT and invoice issues, etc.
  • Work close with HSE department to ensure all HSE mud requirements are in compliance. Work with security personnel.
  • Identify, assess and control potential and actual drilling fluids hazards for each job.
  • Work with accounts payable system (EAM, Proactis or similar system) and associated personnel to ensure system used correctly with invoices paid in a timely fashion. Review invoices for accuracy, credit adjustments for NPT, etc.
  • Maintain and update mud intangibles inventory list and coordinate with appropriate departments involved with intangible assets.
  • Assist with contract administration to ensure adherence and contract value monitored.
  • Provide 24 hours per day / 7 days per week oversight with drilling, completion, and workover drilling and completion fluid operations.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned. Note the responsibilities and objectives are subject to changes and modifications at any time.
  • Attend internal or external company, regulatory, or partner meetings as required.
  • Review drilling and completion muds used in the geographic area and make improvements.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Education
  • B.S. Engineering Degree (Petroleum Preferred). Requirement may be waived based on work experience.
  • Significant industry training courses
  • Current Well Control Certificate
  • Location and Timing
  • Rig site at either Sarta of Qara Dagh wells. Ideally on a 28/28 Rotation. Covid may change rotation to 2 weeks quarantine in Erbil, 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off, or similar type schedule. Some travel to Mud Companies, Erbil, rig locations, and other locations. Paid travel days are 2 per work hitch (one day at the start of hitch and one day at the end of a hitch). If quarantine is required consultant will be paid for each day during quarantine.  

Job Knowledge, Skills and Work Experience
  • Engineering degree.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Must have good/excellent writing skills.
  • Ten plus years of Drilling, Completion, Workover Mud Engineer experience. 
  • Significant land rig drilling and completion mud experience would be a plus.
  • Experience with high levels of H2S and CO2 would be a plus.
  • Experience using MPD is a plus.
  • Major Operator experience as staff or consultant a plus.
  • Good/excellent leadership, writing, and communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Pragmatic proactive self-starter who can work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Drilling, completion, and workover mud engineer experience in KRI would be a significant plus.
  • Desire to build and maintain a drilling and completion mud performance database to optimize drilling capability would be a plus.
  • Sensitivity working with different cultures and diverse backgrounds.
  • Service company experience would be a plus. 
  • Proficient with computer applications.
