The National Democratic Institute (NDI) is seeking to contract a Senior/Program Assistant to assist its political parties and governance programs conducted in Iraq. The Senior/Program Assistant will be based in Baghdad, Iraq, and will report to the Resident Senior Program Manager and Resident Senior Program Officer.
The Senior/Program Assistant will help with program tasks, as defined by the Senior Program Manager, that aim to support political party and governance development throughout Iraq. These responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:
Work closely with the Resident Senior Program Manager, Resident Senior Program Officer, and Senior Country Director to implement NDI’s political party and governance program activities;
Arrange logistics for NDI’s training and programmatic activities throughout Iraq (workshops, conferences, meetings, and other events) - with tasks including communication with participants, coordination of participant travel, reservation of activity venues and accommodations, supply set-up, preparation and distribution of materials, payments to vendors, and other problem-solving related to activity implementation;
Work with NDI’s Finance and Administrative team to prepare financial advances and reconciliations of program expenditures;
Provide written translation and oral interpretation, Arabic-English and English-Arabic. Knowledge of Kurdish is preferable;
Facilitate regular communication with staff and program partners, as necessary. Serve as an NDI liaison with identified political party points-of-contact throughout Iraq for the purpose of activity preparation;
Assist with basic data collection efforts to monitor and track program activities, in line with NDI’s performance monitoring framework, and prepare reporting;
Assist in preparation of program and news updates as well as other written products; and
Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Program Manager, Senior Program Officer, or Senior Country Director.
Minimum one-year of experience on similar work with international organizations or civil society organizations;
Bachelor’s Degree required, with degree in social sciences fields preferred;
Strong written and oral communication skills in Arabic and English, with Kurdish skills a plus;
Strong Arabic-to-English/English-to-Arabic written translation and oral interpretation skills, with English-Kurdish translation and interpretation a plus;
Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff, international personnel and consultants, political actors, and NGO community;
Analytical and problem-solving skills, with capacity for innovative thinking;
Programmatic and financial management skills;
Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team;
Working knowledge of Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, and G+), and PC-based word processing and spreadsheet applications;
Ability and willingness to work beyond usual working hours, when necessary.
Ability and willingness to travel throughout Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, security situation permitting.
