DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The communications officer will report to the Outreach Project Manager, in coordination with the Communications Manager and will work on QANDIL’s ‘Outreach Project,’ alongside other communication and visibility products for the whole Duhok office. The outreach project is a joint initiative by UNHCR and QANDIL, which aims to mobilize Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) within Dohuk Governorate to build their own community-based mechanism for protection through volunteers. The project works in some key locations in Dohuk governorate. The communications officer will be responsible for creating both online and offline communications and visibility products for the outreach project; including but not limited to, creating short video clips promoting the project and the volunteers, creating information leaflets, a quarterly newsletter and press releases.

The communications officer will support other QANDIL Duhok teams by providing social media and website support, designing a dynamic communications and visibility strategy, with support of the Field Coordinator in Duhok and producing promotional materials.

The Communications Officer will work closely with Qandil staff and members of refugee and IDP communities as well as coordinating with other relevant departments within Qandil and UNHCR.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Designing a dynamic visibility and communication strategy

  • Creating short videos to promote the QANDIL Outreach volunteer project

  • Producing information leaflets for a wide and varied audience

  • Designing and producing visibility materials

  • Managing social media output for the QANDIL Duhok office

  • Develop and conduct Communications trainings for program staff and volunteers

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with partners and volunteers internally

  • Assisting volunteers and outreach team leaders in creating and managing localised online information platforms using social media

  • Provide information and support to corporate communications products

  • Identify new communications platforms and ideas

  • Producing a quarterly newsletter for the Outreach Project

     

Essential experience

  • Excellent skills in the development of communications strategies;

    • Ability to produce, film and edit, quality short videos for an internet within tight deadlines

    • Excellent knowledge and use of social media

  • High level of self-motivation, initiative, and creativity

    • Proven experience of using Adobe Suite (or other design software) to create posters, leaflets and newsletters

    • Time management skills and effective problem-solving skills required.

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to work with both community members as well as local authorities in a sensitive and respectful manner, and ensuring that all community members are represented.

  • Willingness to work in all areas of Dohuk Governorate.

    • Must work well within ethnically or religiously diverse groups.

    • Fluent spoken and written English. Working knowledge of Arabic and Kurdish highly desired.

 

Desirable experience

  • Previous experience with community mobilization or organizing community-based activities is a significant asset.

  • Previous management experience is a significant asset.

  • Previous experience for NGOs and/or humanitarian work is an asset.

  • Previous experience in organizing and facilitating trainings is a significant asset.

Previous experience in writing for and pitching to media.
