The duty station for the “Advisor Academic Research” is the GIZ Baghdad Office.
The GIZ “Private Sector Development” Project is looking for an advisor well acquainted with academic research. The ideal candidate holds a research degree (Dr./Ph.D.) and has acquired first research experiences in Iraq or abroad. The degree might be in Social Science, Economy, Business or other relevant fields. A proactive, hands-on, creative personality is an advantage
The academic advisor will support the Head of Program to improve economic research in the country. This would include identifying, planning, and implementing capacity building measures in up to 5 universities. Furthermore, the position is responsible for forming a research network on economic issues in Iraq which will be able to offer quality research to government entities, eventually
  1. Planning & Monitoring
The position holder provides local, practical, and academic knowledge to the project planning process. Identification of major obstacles for economic research In Iraq will be a core activity in the planning process.
The position is responsible for results assessment according to GIZ standard M&E schemes with the preparation of reports and public relation material.
2. Implementation
The position holder supports the implementation of the project’s operational plan in coordination with the Head of Program. This may include the full responsibility for certain activities according to the standard project cycle.
3. Strategic Networking and Stakeholder management
The position holder will built-up university networks and strong linkages to academia. This includes representing the project and its activities, built-up and care for relationships (stakeholder mapping), identification of potential cooperation partners, and being the contact person for research and academia to the project.
4. Other duties/additional tasks
The position holder will support the project with any additional task if necessary especially in investment promotion and entrepreneurship activities.
C.Required qualifications, competencies and experience
Professional experience
  • Post Graduate (i.e. Master) or Advanced Research degree (Ph.D.) in Economics, Business, Social Science, Political Economics or relevant fields.
  • First experiences in research, research consultancy, or academic organization are an advantage.
  • Experiences in organisation building or research network management/building is a strong advantage.
  • Background in government consultancy is an advantage.
  • Proven work experience in international development cooperation organisations is an advantage.
  • Above average academic Arabic and good working English language (able to easily communicate in the work environment) is required.
Other knowledge, additional competencies
  • Office Software literacy
  • German language skills are an advantage
  • Experienced networker
  • Ability to travel in Iraq and abroad for limited periods of time
