Roles of the University Based Teacher/Trainer

We are seeking to hire a national expert to work in the Clinical Psychology Department of a university in Erbil Governorate to be based in Koya on behalf of one of our national NGO clients. The successful candidate will be a Clinical/Counseling Psychologist and will be a compassionate, confident, dynamic and independent person with extensive experience in teaching and counseling services with 1people, who suffered war, conflict and are victims of torture and survivors of trauma. The candidate will help with curriculum development, teaching courses, training MHPSS workers, and providing supervision to students.


We are seeking a candidate to begin working in October for an 18 month contract, with the opportunity to extend beyond the program period.

University based expert responsibilities:

  • Work with an international expert and local faculty to strengthen existing undergraduate clinical psychology program to prepare students to meet urgent needs of conflict-affected populations.
  • Assist the international expert in training the faculty of the undergraduate clinical psychology program on the new modules developed under the program which will be added to the existing curriculum.
  • Review the existing supervised practicum component of the undergraduate clinical psychology program and identify gaps. 
  • Assist with the design of the curriculum for a certification program for current community mental health practitioners.
  • Organize and assist in delivering training for the faculty of the clinical psychology program.
  • Coordinate, organize, and deliver training for community mental health practitioners.
  • Mentor and supervise the community mental practitioners between training sessions and provide feedback to the international expert, including making recommendations for change where required.
  • Report regularly to the Project Manager and Program Director.
  • Any other tasks required.

Essential Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
  • Relevant work experience in curriculum development, teaching and supervision desired.
  • Clinical and/or academic experience in working with people in conflict and war preferably IDPs and/or refugees.
  • Strong belief in human rights and gender equality
  • Good interpersonal skills including ability to gain trust and build relationships.
  • Good diplomatic and persuasion skills.
  • High standard of spoken and written English, Kurdish, and Arabic.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Ability to work in a stressful setting and adapt quickly to changing environments.
