Role of the Clinical Psychology Advisor:

We are seeking to hire an international expert to work with the Clinical Psychology Department of a university in Erbil Governorate to be based in Koya, on behalf of one of our national NGO clients. We are looking for a compassionate, competent, dynamic and independent person committed to helping the KRI meet the mental health needs of its current crisis. Candidate will work with local faculty, and other local and international experts, to strengthen the university’s undergraduate clinical psychology curriculum, to strengthen its supervised practicums, to provide capacity building and training to faculty teaching the material, and to help establish a training program for current MHPSS workers in the KRI. The successful candidate will be a licensed clinical/counseling psychologist with extensive experience in counseling, teaching, and program development. She/he will have broad expertise and experience working with people who have suffered violence, including sexual assault, loss of loved ones, displacement, torture, and survivors of other traumatic events.

We are seeking a candidate to start in October/November 2016, to be based in Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq.  Ideally, we would like a candidate full time for 18 months but we will consider all qualified applicants, even for shorter term assignments.



  • Advise on strengthening undergraduate clinical psychology program at university to prepare students to meet urgent needs of conflict-affected population.
  • Analyze current curriculum and identify gaps.
  • Work closely with stakeholders, to draw from existing teaching resources and materials and to adapt for local context, and/or develop additional content for undergraduate curriculum on trauma, torture, sexual violence, and grief and loss.
  • Work with the professors at the undergraduate clinical psychology program at the university to find the best way to integrate the developed curriculum into the existing curriculum.
  • Train the faculty on the new elements of the curriculum.
  • Review the existing supervised practicum component and identify and implement ways to strengthen the program.
  • Work closely with the university faculty and other program staff to identify opportunities for other practicum sites for the undergraduate students.
  • Mentor the faculty on the curriculum and supervision of students.
  • Lead the design of a curriculum for a new certificate Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Practitioner Program for mental health practitioners working SGBV, focusing on the same new elements of the undergraduate program.
  • Train faculty who will teach and supervise the execution of the Practitioner Program.


Essential Requirements:

  • PhD or PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
  • Relevant work experience in an academic role, including with curriculum development, teaching and supervision.
  • Clinical and academic experience in working with people in conflict and war preferably IDPs and/or refugees.
  • Understanding of vicarious trauma.
  • Strong belief in human rights and gender equality.
  • Good interpersonal skills including ability to gain trust and build relationships.
  • Good diplomatic and persuasion skills.
  • High standard of spoken and written English. Arabic and/or Kurdish is a plus.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Ability to work in a stressful setting and adapt quickly to changing environments.
  • Demonstrated competence in intercultural work/contexts
